Air India air hostess Harsha Lobo, 53, is being treated for multiple injuries at the Nanavati Hospital after she fell off an Air India plane at Mumbai's international airport on Monday. Air India said, that Lobo, fell off while "closing the door of the aircraft."

"An investigation will be done to find out the exact cause of the incident," the airline added.

The flight was delayed for over an hour. The New Delhi bound AI 864 was to take off at about 7 am when Lobo fell down several metres on the hard tarmac. Ground staff came to help her and she was immediately taken to the hospital.

Air India said to ANI, "In an unfortunate incident, one of our cabin crew (members), Harsha Lobo, fell down on the tarmac from the Boeing-777 aircraft door while closing it. She sustained injuries to her legs and has been taken to the Nanavati Hospital for further treatment."

ANI added Ms Lobo has suffered many fractures including a compound fracture in the right leg, both heels, soft tissue injury in chest, abdomen and lower spine.

In December 2015, a technician working for Air India died after being sucked into a jet engine as the plane pushed back for take-off at Mumbai airport. The tragedy happened when the co-pilot mistook a signal from ground staff and started the engine.
