As preparations are on in full swing for the Kumbh mela which is set to begin from Allahabad on January 15, 2019, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday indicated that the city may be renamed as Prayagraj instead of Allahabad ahead of the famous Kumbh fair.

"In the meeting called to review the preparedness of Kumbh, a proposal was given by Akhada Parishad and others regarding changing the name of Allahabad district. UP Governor Ram Naik has also given his consent to the proposal," said CM Yogi, addressing media at the Circuit House in Allahabad.

"We also supported the proposal and very soon the name of Allahabad district will be changed to Prayagraj," he added.

"This Kumbh Mela will have a global outreach in which delegates of all countries that have embassies in India will participate. People from more than 6,00,000 villages across the country will contribute during the Kumbh Mela. We are being given full assistance from the central government," CM Yogi said.

"Preparations for 2019 Allahabad Kumbh have been satisfactory so far. We will finish all the preparations by 30th November this year," the UP CM said.

"More than 1,22,000 toilets will be installed for 2019 Allahabad Kumbh. We want to spread the message of Swachh Bharat during Kumbh," he said.

The 49-day massive mela, which is expected to have in attendance 15 crore people, will begin in Allahabad from January 15 next year, and due to the large numbers, the main area of the Kumbh Mela has been doubled from the earlier 5,000 acres to 10,000 acres this time.

A special team of experts from the central paramilitary force will soon be conducting a  reconnaissance and survey of the mela area at the banks of the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers.

The important dates for the Kumbh Mela being held at Allahabad (Prayag) from January 14, 2019 to March 4, 2019 are: Makar Sankranti on January 15, Paush Purnima on January 21, Mauni Amavasya (Somvati) on February 4, Basant Panchami on February 10, Maghi Purnima on February 19, and Mahashivratri on March 4.
