Ahead Of Assembly Elections Madhya Pradesh Grants MoS Status To 5 Sadhus

In an interesting turn of events, the Madhya Pradesh Government has accorded the status of Minister of State to five sadhus.

The MoS status has been accorded to Narmadanand Maharaj, Hariharanand Maharaj, Computer Baba, Bhayyu Maharaj and Pandit Yogendra Mahant.

Swami Navdev Tyagi alias Computer Baba was one of those who jumped the Aam Aadmi Party bandwagon in 2014. He was an aspirant for an AAP ticket from Indore where he is quite popular as he represents the Digambar Akhada based in Indore.

All these sadhus were appointed to a committee set up for the conservation of Narmada River on March 31.

As members of the committee, they have now been accorded the MoS status. ANI shared a copy of the order issued by Additional Secretary of the General Administration Department KK Katiya in the name of the Governor of Madhya Pradesh.

Computer Baba had announced an agitation against the Madhya Pradesh Government for corruption in the Narmada. The fifteen-day long yatra was named “Narmada Ghotala Rath Yatra” which has been cancelled now.

After being given a MoS rank, Computer baba said, “We thank the government on behalf of the 'sadhu' community for showing trust in us, and we will try our best to work for the welfare of the society”.

The timing of the move is extremely important as it comes months before the state goes to polls. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh will be eying for a fourth term. The state has been a BJP bastion since 2003 when Uma Bharti uprooted two-term Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh of the Congress party.

The decision can also be seen as a move to fight the anti-incumbency in the state. The Congress party won the Mungoli and Kolaras assembly seats in the recently conducted by-elections with huge margins.
