Another UP Train Derailment: 7 Coaches Of Shaktipunj Express Derail In Obra

Marking the 4th railway derailment in the past 30 days, 7 coaches of the Shaktipunj Express on its way from Howrah to Jabalpur derailed near the Obara railway station in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday morning. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.

According to reports, since the train was running at a relatively slow speed of 40 km/hr there was minimal damage when the Shaktipunj Express derailed around 6:00 AM, however, the cause of the derailment is yet to be identified.

"The accident occurred at around 6:25 AM and we have already cleared out the site," Railway ministry spokesperson Anil Saxena said.

After the derailment, the passengers were transferred to other coaches and the train continued to its destination.

"All passengers were put on the remaining coaches and by 7:28 AM all of them had left the spot. All of them are safe and no one was injured in the accident," Saxena added.

Regarding the increase in the frequency of railway derailments with 4 incidents taking place in the span of one month, Saxena said, "We have increased allocations for safety related work & addressing problem of renewal & maintenance of tracks."

On August 19, a total of 13 coaches of the Kalinga Utkal Express bound for Haridwar derailed near Khatauli in Uttar Pradesh resulting in the death of more than 20 people, and injury of at least 200 others. On 23 August, the engine and 5 coaches of the Kaifiyat Express derailed near the Auraiyya district of UP, injuring more than 70 passengers. On August 29, the engine and 9 coaches of the Mumbai-bound Duronto Express derailed in the Titwala district of  Maharashtra but no casualties or injuries were noted.
