At least 66 garden workers died after consuming poisonous bootleg liquor in district Golaghat, Assam. Several others have been admitted in a critical condition at the Jorhat Medical College Hospital and at the Golaghat civil hospital on Thursday Evening.

The deaths come less than two weeks after more than 100 people died after drinking bootleg alcohol in northern India. At least seven women were among the dead at the plantation.

According to locals, the workers at Salmara tea garden had consumed the liquor on Thursday evening and four women died soon after. In the next 12 hours, eight more deaths were reported. The toll has now touched 66.

Police suspect the liquor was procured late on Thursday night from the house of a woman named Dhraupadi Oran (65) and her son Sanju Oran (30) in the Salmara tea garden of Golaghat. The mother and son have died, too, adding to the difficulty in the investigation into the case.

Speaking to media, Singh said “They were taken to the hospital where they succumbed. From today early morning, several persons reported having fallen ill.”

The cases were reported from both Golaghat and Jorhat districts.

Singh further said, “In Golaghat, 22 people have died, including 11 women. Another 24 are undergoing treatment at hospitals in the district.”
