A 20-year-old woman in Chikmagalur in Karnataka committed suicide by hanging herself, blaming moral policing in her suicide note, after 5 men of a local right-wing organisation came to her house on Saturday evening and heckled her in front of her parents regarding her contact with a Muslim man.

According to reports, the woman, who was an undergraduate commerce student, used to chat on Facebook with a Muslim man who attended the same college as her. The right-wing group initially gave her warnings on Facebook, then barged into her house on Saturday, telling her parents of her friendship with the Muslim man, claiming it to be a case of "love jihad".

The term "love jihad" is used by right-wing groups accusing Muslim men of enticing Hindu women into relationships and then converting them.

After the men of the right-wing group left, the 20-year-old woman hanged herself.

"On 6 January a 20-year-old woman, Dhanya Shree, committed suicide. In her suicide note she wrote that a group of 5 harassed her and her mother by alleging that she goes out with a Muslim boy. 1 person arrested," said SP Chikmagalur.

"We have registered a case of an unnatural death. One of the men named in the suicide note has been arrested and our teams are searching for the remaining four," said the city police chief K Annamalai.

The police chief added that they would not spare anyone responsible for mentally torturing the young women, which led to her suicide.

Reports of moral policing and violence have become increasingly frequent in Karnataka, where state assembly elections are set to take place later this year. Ahead of the New Year's Eve celebrations, Karnataka moral police had called for the closing of hotels by midnight, as they encourage "drugs and sex."

This is so unacceptable. All men who harassed her is responsible for her untimely death/murder and should be charged with manslaughter.
