2 CRPF Troopers Killed In Jammu And Kashmir's Anantnag After Stone-Pelters Attack Vehicle

A total of 2 CRPF troopers were killed and 1 injured when stone pelters targeted a CRPF vehicle on Wednesday night in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district.

A 3-tonne CRPF vehicle carrying 20 CRPF soldiers was targeted by stone pelters in the Kokernag area of Anantnag, resulting in the vehicle losing control and running over two CRPF men on a bike who were accompanying the vehicle, killing them instantly. The driver of the vehicle was also injured.

All three were rushed to the hospital were the CRPF men on the motorcycle succombed to their injuries and the driver is said to be in critical condition and undergoing treatment. The deceased CRPF men, both residents of south Kashmir, have been identified as Nazeer Ahmad of Kokernag and Farooq Ahmad of Verinag.

IG CRPF Zulfiqar Hassan said, "a court of inquiry has been initiated, an FIR has been registered and hunt for culprits is on."

The attack took place as the troops of 164 battalion CRPF were returning from a 12-hour  duty in Kokernag's Hiller area, 85 kilometres from Srinagar where they had been put on preventive deployment in the wake of a separatist call for Shopian Chalo protest.

The mob began pelting stones from a hilly terrain vantage point, breaking the protective metal shield and hitting driver Roop Singh on his head. Singh lost consciousness and the truck lost control, hitting the motorcycle of the same battalion that was moving ahead of the truck.

While both the CRPF personnel on the motorcycle were killed, the seriously injured driver was evacuated to a base hospital. The others in the truck sustained minor injuries only.
