Tahir Merchant alias Tahir Takla, who was last year sentenced to death after his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, died at a hospital in Pune on Wednesday after he was taken to the hospital from prison due to chest pains.

"One (1993 Mumbai blasts) convict named Tahir Merchant, who was lodged in the Yerawada prison, was admitted to Sassoon Hospital after he complained of chest pain. However, he died there during treatment around 3.45 am," Dr Bhushankumar Upadhyay, Additional Director General of Prisons Department said to PTI.

"Merchant was extradited to India from Abu Dhabi and was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2010 and serving his jail term in Yerwada central prison in Pune," an official said.

According to police, Merchant had arranged the finances for the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts in which 257 people were killed and 713 others injured. He was also linked to conspirators Tiger Memon and Dawood Ibrahim and was convicted by a special TADA court in 2007 along with 100 other accused including actor Sanjay Dutt.

In September last year, death sentence was awarded to Tahir Merchant and Firoz Khan and life imprisonment to Abu Salem and Karimullah Khan by a special court, which held that Merchant was among the main conspirators.

"The role of Tahir in conspiracy is prominent. He is one of the initiators of the conspiracy," the court had said in its ruling in June 2017.

Apart from Merchant, another convicted in the case Mustafa Dossa died of cardiac arrest last year in Mumbai a day after CBI sought the death penalty for him.
