At least 16 people have been killed and 27 injured when a thunderstorm struck various parts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday evening.

UP Chief minister Yogi Adityanath, still campaigning in Karnataka has announced Rs. 4 lakh for the deceased person's family.

Half a dozen trains, including Farakka Express, Avadh-Assam Express, Gonda Passenger, Amrapali Express and Lucknow-Gorakhpur Express were disrupted as many uprooted trees landed on the rail tracks due to the storm.

Most of the deaths in UP were caused by the falling of trees and due to lightning. UP is one of the hard-hit areas where the maximum deaths took place due to storms. In the heavy storms last week, the badly stricken district was Agra, where 43 people died and 35 were injured.

More than 500 hoardings across the state also collapsed.

The India Meteorological Department is being criticised for providing inaccurate predictions in recent months. In the wake of the more than 73 people getting killed in thunderstorms last week, UP CM Yogi Adityanath blamed the Met department for not giving sufficient warning before the storm.
