1 Year Of GST, ‘Grossly Scary Tax,’ For Congress, 'Growth, Simplicity And Transparency' For BJP

On completion of 1 Year of GST on Sunday, Bharatiya Janta Party is celebrating an anniversary of 1 year of Growth, Simplicity and Transparency whereas Congress has a different opinion for 1 year of GST, terming it ‘Grossly Scary Tax’ for millions of traders, shopkeepers & businessmen.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said,''I congratulate the people of India on the special occasion of GST completing 1 year."


BJP claims GST is bringing a historic surge in the number of registered enterprises with an addition of 48 lakh enterprises in 1 year after GST as compared to 66 lakh number of enterprises that have been registered from Independence till now. Also, around 350 crore number of invoices processed, over 11 crore number of returns filed and over 10 crore number of E-way bills.

Hitting on BJP remarks on GST, Opposition Congress MLA Randeep Singh Surjewala referred to GST which the BJP is calling a ‘Genuine and Simple tax’ as ‘Gabbar Singh tax’ adding that a single tax GST as promised remains a ‘pipe dream’.

"Multiple Returns, Multiple Rules & Multiple Tax Slabs has made the life of an ordinary trader nightmarish. Every Taxpayer has to search a ‘Code Book’ running into 438 pages with 18,036 categories, Out of 7 Tax Slabs applicable slab has to be found, Add all State Cesses, Add Supply chain incentives and Calculate GST,” Surjewala.

Surjewala also said, “Out of 111 lakh registered businesses under GST, not more than 50 percent have been able to file GST returns. Ambiguity, complication, deficiency of IT infrastructure remains a major challenge. GST collections remain at an average of 90K Cr against the target of 1.25K Cr per month.
