9 Killed, 14 Injured In Gas Pipeline Blast At Bhilai Steel Plant In Chattisgarh

In a gas pipeline blast at Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh's Durg district on Tuesday, at least 9 people have been killed and 14 got injured.

According to reports, the blast took place around 11 am in a gas pipeline connected to the coke oven section of the plant with over 24 employees were working at the spot.

Inspector General of Police (Durg Range) G P Singh was quoted by PTI as saying, "At least nine people were burnt to death while 14 others received injuries and most of them were said to be in a serious condition."

The plant is owned by state-owned Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and it is located around 30 km away from the capital Raipur.

The moment incident took place, police personnel and rescue teams had rushed to the incident spot and took all the victims to the nearest local hospital.

As per the SAIL's website, Eleven times winner of Prime Minister's Trophy for Best Integrated Steel Plant in the country, Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) is India's sole producer and supplier of world-class rails for Indian Railways including 260 metre long rails.

It is also a major producer of a large variety of wide and heavy steel plates and structural steel.

With an annual production capacity of 3.153 MT of saleable steel, the plant has specializations in products such as wire rods and merchant products.
