The nine-day festival of expressing piety towards the ultimate feminine power reaches the sixth day of celebrations on September 26. Devotees all around the globe observe the holy days with much pomp and show.

The sixth form of Goddess Durga, Maa Katyayini is worshipped to gain blessings for a happy marriage along with the strength to fight all obstacles in life. Popularly known as the epitome of love and war, the goddess is the married form of Maa Parvati.

Despite being the calm deity, the goddess can be equally violent if provoked. Mounted on a magnificent lion, Devi Katyayani is depicted with four hands holding a sword and a lotus in her left hands whereas she has “Varada” and “Abhaya” Mudras in her right ones.

As per Hindu beliefs, Goddess Durga has taken birth as the daughter of Rishi Katyayan after being happy with his devotion, due to which her manifestation was called Katyayani. The deity took birth to save the mankind from the adversities created  by Demon Mahishasur, whom she later killed.

Traditionally, the maiden girls seek blessings from the goddess to marry their favorable groom. The custom started in Gokul where the young females (Gopiyan) who desired to marry Lord Krishna used to observe fast, which later became a holy practice to seek a soul mate.

Maa Katyayani is believed to govern the planet Jupiter and saves her devotees from the baleful effects of the said planet. Couples who wish to marry soon should also worship the goddess with a clean heart.

Devotees must chant the holy mantra, “कात्यायनि महामाये महायोगिन्यधीश्वरि । नन्द गोपसुतं देविपतिं मे कुरु ते नमः॥” (Katyayani Mahamaye Mahayoginyadheeshwari, Nandgopsutam Devipatim Me Kuru Te Namah) while worshipping.
