India is known as the land of festivals and feasts. On Monday, September 17, we celebrate Vishwakarma Jayanti. According to Hindu mythology, Vishwakarma was the divine craftsman and deity of all the artisans. He was the son of Lord Brahma and was the creator of palaces of all gods. Vishwakarma is depicted as the God with four hands, holding a water pot, a noose, a book and craftsman’s tools.

Lord Vishwakarma is an inspiration for all architects and engineers. It is said that throughout the four yugas it was Vishwakarma who built a number of palaces for the gods. In Satyug, Vishwakarma created heaven or Swarglok (the abode of Gods). He is believed to be the creator of golden Lanka as well. When Shiv married Parvati he invited Vishwakarma to build him a palace. Lord Krishna also appealed him to design the city of Dwarka.

Vishwakarma Jayanti is celebrated in schools, where children put up plays and programmes depicting the teachings of Maharaj Vishwakarma. People are taking over social media platforms to wish each other and celebrate this occasion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also tweeted this morning wishing everyone a very happy Vishwakarma Jayanti.
