Sydney's highly anticipated midnight fireworks display took place on Monday as Australia welcomes the new year 2019.

A thunderstorm drenched tens of thousands of people as they gathered for Sydney’s traditional spectacular fireworks display, creating a show of its own with dozens of lightning strikes.

Ahead of the marquee midnight display, kids were treated to an early New Year's Eve show encompassing the new gold palm design that encompassed waves of green, purple and red.

A family fireworks show started at 9:00 pm, followed by Calling Country, a celebration of Australia's Indigenous heritage.
