As per Hindu beliefs, whatever a man achieves in life, a designated god is behind his success or failure. Lords guide people in a particular direction and as a devotee, the least a person can do is, thank them for their guidance.

The multi-day festival, Navratri works as a medium of showing gratitude towards the goddesses who have kept us under their wings as a mother to their children. The festival celebrates the nine manifestations of Hindu Goddesses.

If translated, Navratri in Sanskrit means 'Nine Nights', hence the festival is observed for nine days with each day devoted to a different goddess. The goddesses who are believed to govern the earthly elements are paid tribute during the celebrations.

It is believed that a mighty evil, Mahishasura who was an ardent follower of Lord Shiva received the gift the eternity from the God for his worship. Following the boon, he took various innocent lives and started his journey to winning the three 'loks' or three worlds.

Terrified by his attacks, the other Gods approached Lord Shiva for help who united his power with Lord Brahma and Vishnu and created a divine female warrior, Goddess Durga. Mahishasura, who was mesmerised by her beauty wanted to marry her.

In order to win her over, Durga challenged him for a battle which went on for 9 days. On the last day, Goddess beheaded the evil and ever since the nine-day festival is celebrated as Navratri.
