Navaratri Festival 2018: Know All About The Dates And Significance Of The 9-Day Festival

Navaratri festival is one of the most auspicious occasions for the Hindus. The devotees worship nine forms of Goddess Maa Durga - Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skanda Mata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Maha Gauri and Siddhidatri till nine days to get the blessing of Maa Durga.

This year, Sharad Navratri festival will begin from October 10, 2018 (Wednesday) and will be celebrated till October 18, 2018 (Thursday).

For Navaratri festival, Ghatasthapana is the most important ritual, which marks the beginning of the Navratri in which devotees invoke the Goddess Aadi Shakti.

Each Day has a special significance of its own and is celebrated in different a way. Let’s have a look at the importance and the way ceremonies are held:

First Navaratri Date: October 10, 2018

Shailputri Puja- On the first day of Navratri, offer fresh & scented flowers and Shringar Items to the small girls. People should offer white flowers to the small girl to please Goddess Saraswati of wisdom. By giving a red flower, one pleases goddess of Wealth.

Second Navaratri Date: October 11, 2018

Brahmacharini Puja- Fruits are given to small girls and who are worshipped. The people who offer fruits get blessings of health and wealth. It is believed that the fruits should be sweet in taste not sour.

Third Navaratri Date: October 12, 2018

Chandraghanta Puja- On the third day, devotees offer delicious sweets to the small girls. One can offer Kheer, Halwa or kesariya rice made at home.

Fourth Navaratri Date: October 13, 2018

Kushmanda Puja- On the fourth day of Navratri, people should offer beautiful clothes to the girls. It can be anything like you can offer handkerchiefs or colourful ribbons too.

Fifth Navaratri Date: October 14, 2018

Skandamata Puja- On this day, offering five types of Shringar is considered auspicious. You can offer items like Bindi, Chudi, Mehndi, Hair Clips, Kajal, Scent, Ribbons and Scented Soap etc.

Sixth Navaratri Date: October 15, 2018

Katyayani Puja- On the sixth day of Navratri, devotees should offer toys to small girls, it is considered prosperous.  

Seventh Navaratri Date: October 16, 2018

Kalratri Puja- On this day, devotees should offer educational items like pen, sketch pen, pencil, copy, textbook, drawing book, water bottle, box and a school bag to the small girls.

Eighth Navaratri Date: October 17, 2018

Maha Gauri, Durga Ashtami- On the eighth day, devotees should do whole Shringar of a small girl and worship her. On this day, people should do Puja of small girl’s feet through milk and then offer kumkum, rice and flower on girl’s feet. After this, offer some delicious food to the girl and give some gift to her according to your wish.

Ninth Navaratri Date: October 18, 2018

Siddhidatri Pooja, Ayudha Puja- On the last day of Navratri, you should offer kheer to the small girls and Puri made from milk & flour. By putting the Mahavar around the feet of the small girls and making Mehndi designs on girl’s hand, the Navratri worship is completed. At the end of the whole worship procedure, give a red chunari to her as a gift.

On the tenth-day people celebrate Durga Visarjan and Dussehra Festival all around the country with great pomp and show.

It is considered that the people, who worship during nine days of Navratri and donate do not have to suffer much and do better in life.
