There are days to celebrate Mothers, Fathers, Children and Teachers, and on this Sunday, April 22, is the day to celebrate Earth Day. On this day people not only propagate the message of awareness but also take oaths to conserve and preserve the environment from pollution. Earth Day is celebrated across the world, and the theme of Earth Day 2018 is to 'End Plastic Pollution'.

This day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, and the person behind the idea was US Senator Gaylord Nelson, who gathered the support of millions of Americans and organised the event. After then, the idea of clean environment and earth preservation turned into an international agenda. Events were organised to educate and inform people about protecting the environment.

After 20 years of encouragement by environmentalists around the world, the Earth Day became official and environmental concerns became an international issue.

"Earth Day 2018 is dedicated to providing the information and inspiration needed to fundamentally change human attitude and behaviour about plastics," according to Earth Day Network.

The motto is to make people understand about the pollution created due to plastics so that the consumption of plastic can be lessened as far as possible.

As it is mentioned in a paper published in the scientific journal Chemistry & Biology in 2009, plastic is non-biodegradable and disposed plastic can remain in the environment for up to 2,000 years.

On the occasion of Earth Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted the importance of taking care of the Earth.
