The United Nations commemorates the International Day of Rural Women on October 15. It celebrates the efficiency of rural women who are the agents of change.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, "The empowerment of rural women and girls is essential to building a prosperous, equitable and peaceful future for all on a healthy planet."

This year’s theme, “Sustainable infrastructure, services and social protection for gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls”, places empowerment of rural women at the heart of fulfilling the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Rural women make up a quarter of the world’s population. They grow much of our food, strengthen economies and build climate resilience. In India, rural women do the bulk of unpaid care and domestic work, where their efforts are not even considered.

It’s high time that we open the window of opportunity to close gender gaps in agriculture in particular. Empowering rural women economically and socially has a positive impact on their families, communities and countries.

Indian Government has launched various schemes for the upliftment of Rural Woman

  • Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme
  • One Stop Centre Scheme
  • Women Helpline Scheme
  • UJJAWALA : A Comprehensive Scheme for Prevention of trafficking and Rescue, Rehabilitation and Re-integration of Victims of Trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation.
  • SWADHAR Greh (A Scheme for Women in Difficult Circumstances)
  • Support to Training and Employment Programme for Women (STEP)

Let International Day of Rural Women be an opportunity to join in supporting ALL women and in claiming their rights!
