The birth of Lord Krishna, who is considered to be the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu is celebrated as Krishna Janmashtami with great festivity across the nation in the Hindu month of Shravana on Ashtami Tithi. This year Janmashtami is being celebrated on September 2 and September 3 with the Ashtami Tithi beginning from 8:47 PM on September 2 and ends at 7:20 PM on September 3.

Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudev while they were being held captive by Kansa - the king of Mathura in Dwapar Yuga. Due to a prophecy stating that the 7th born child of Devaki and Vasudev shall kill Kansa, all the other siblings of Krishna were killed by the latter. Krishna is mostly remembered for saving the people of Mathura from the cruelty of their evil King, Kansa.

During Krishna's birth, his father, Vasudev was guided by mystic forces to Vrindavan where Nanda and Yasoda took Krishna under their wing and raise him. Krishna, as warned by the prophecy later, killed Kansa and turned Mathura back into a happy place. Krishna has taught mankind the basic essence of life. His teachings to Arjun in the battle of Kurukshetra serves as the pathway of truth and compassion to many and form the basis of the Bhagavad Gita.

On the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami, people from across the nation took to twitter to share wishes:
