Jammu and Kashmir Special Police Officer (SPO) Adil Basheer who fled on September 28 with 7 AK-47 rifles from a PDP MLA's residence in Srinagar where he had been posted, has joined the terrorist group Hizbul-Mujahideen in Shopian, media reported on Monday.

Pictures of Basheer posing with Hizbul terrorists and stolen rifles went viral on the internet, showing him along with 4 Hizbul commanders, confirming the reports of him joining the militant group.

Basheer had been posted at the resident of PDP MLA Aijaz Ahmad Mir in Srinagar's Jawahar Nagar area and went missing, along with the weapons form the guardroom of the MLA's residence. The SPO Basheer, belonging to the militancy-hit Shopian district of south Kashmir, decamped with 10 weapons, namely 5 AK-47 rifles, 4 INSAS rifle and a pistol.

An alert was sounded across the Kashmir Valley to track down Basheer and a reward of Rs 2 lakh was announced for any information leading to his arrest, but he could not be found, until the pictures surfaced.

In June, a similar incident was reported when another SPO, identified as Irfan Ahmad Dar from the Pulwama district defected to Hizb-ul-Mujahideen along with a stolen AK-47 rifle. He had gone missing from the Pampore police station in Jammu and Kashmir and a massive search operation was launched, but later a Hizbul spokesman Burhan-u-Din claimed he had joined the militant organisation.

"SPO Irfan Ahmad Dar, a resident of Nehama Kakapora of Pulwama district, who fled with his rifle, has joined Hizb-ul-Mujahideen," the spokesman said.

Since September 18, when terror group Hizbul Mujahideen in a video that went viral, threatened security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir to either resign within 4 days or 'get ready to be killed', nearly 40 SPOs and policemen have resigned.
