Three terrorists were gunned down in an encounter between security forces and militants on Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district.

The terrorists belonged to terror group Hizbul Mujahideen. The encounter began after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Sirnoo village of Pulwama after receiving specific intelligence inputs on the presence of militants in the area.

As police were conducting searches, the militants opened fire on them. The forces retaliated, leading to the ongoing encounter.

According to media reports, the police said, "As the security forces closed in on the hiding militants, they fired triggering the ongoing gunfight."

The operation was conducted by a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indian Army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.

One of the terrorists, Zahoor Thokar, was earlier a soldier in the Indian Army. He fled from an Army camp with an AK-47 last year.

There were also reports of stone pelting in the area as the encounter took place. The forces had to resort to tear-gas shelling to disperse the protesters.
