Punjab National Bank made public the details on jeweller Nirav Modi’s scam of nearly $2 billion on February 14, however, Modi had already left the country in January 2018. Initial reports claimed that Modi was in the US, however, an official of the US government state department on Friday said that they cannot confirm if Modi is in the country.

Regarding the US providing assistance to the Indian government in tracing Modi, a spokesperson of the US state department said to PTI, “We refer you to the Department of Justice for questions on legal assistance to the Indian authorities in relation to their investigation of Mr. Modi”.

The Department of Justice however declined to comment on Modi.

Meanwhile a US court has passed an interim order preventing creditors from collecting debt from Firestar Diamond Inc. which is owned by Nirav Modi, after it filed for bankruptcy.

“This means that creditors generally may not take action to collect debts from the debtor or the debtor’s property,” the bankruptcy court said in its order.

Soon after the $1.77 billion fraud with Punjab National Bank came to light, the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) issued a diffusion Notice against famous jeweller Nirav Modi, his wife Ami Modi, brother Nishal Modi and business partner Mehul Choksi.

Subsequently, a series of raids and seizures took place on properties and accounts connected to Modi and Mehul Choksi.

Nirav Modi, without mentioning where he was located, refused to join the CBI investigation into the alleged fraud of PNB, saying that he has “business abroad”. In an earlier statement, Modi blamed PNB for making the details of the scam public, claiming that now there was less chance of him being able to pay back the amount owed.
