Passports Of 8 NRI Husbands Cancelled For Abandoning Their Wives

Eight Non-Indian Residents passports have been cancelled after they left their wives stranded, a senior minister of the Ministry of Women and Child Development said on Thursday.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development and Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs formed a committee to look into the NRI martial dispute cases.

"The committee has received 70 complaints in the last two months. Acting on the complaints, passports of eight NRI husbands have been cancelled and lookout notices issued against them," the WCD official said.

WCD Ministry is giving all possible assistance in NRI martial disputes cases. After extensive deliberation in the meeting chaired by the Ministers of External Affairs and attended by Minister of Women and Child Development and Minister for Law and Justice who recommended some decisions.

The decisions were:

  1. All marriages to be notified in the website of registrars of marriages
  2. Compulsory registration of NRI marriages
  3. Creation of a website by MEA for posting summons/warrants.
  4. Constitution of Integrated Nodal Agency (INA) headed by Secretary, MWCD.

The recommendations relating to compulsory registration of marriages by NRI has been examined by the Government. The Integrated Nodal Agency (INA) discusses regularly the issues related to NRI.

The website is not yet ready to use, but Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has recommended the states to get the marriage registrars to inform about such marriage to the ministry so that the website could be operational at the earliest.
