Mathematician Akshay Venkatesh Wins Fields Medal Award, 'The Nobel Prize For Math'

Indian-origin mathematician Akshay Venkatesh won the prestigious Fields medal awardon Wednesday. The coveted award is also referred to as the Nobel Prize for math.

Venkatesh won this prestigious title along with three other mathematicians at the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 

36-year-old Akshay Venkatesh teaches at Stanford University in California.

Awarded every four years, Fields medal award honours the most promising mathematicians under the age of 40.

Peter Scholze, a 30-year-old professor at the University of Bonn was the youngest winner at the event.

The other winners were Caucher Birkar of the University of Cambridge in England and Alessio Figalli of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

Each winner received a 15,000 Canadian-dollar cash prize.

Born in New Delhi on November 21, 1981, Venkatesh's journey is full of achievements and accolades. At the age of 11 and 12, he started participating in physics and math Olympiads.

After finishing his high school education he went to the University of Western Australia and graduated with first class honours in mathematics in 1997 at the age of 16 only. Later in 2002, he earned his Ph.D. degree at the age of 20.

Venkatesh has worked on number theory, topology, arithmetic geometry, automorphic forms and ergodic theory.

His research paper has been awarded the Ostrowski Prize, the Infosys Prize, the Salem Prize and Sastra Ramanujan Prize.
