Pakistan on Friday granted permission to Kulbhushan Jadhav's mother to visit him in Pakistan along with his wife on December 25. Earlier, Pakistan on November 10 had announced that it would be granting permission to Jadhav's wife to visit him on 'humanitarian grounds', after which India had requested that Jadhav's mother be granted permission as well.

During the visit, an official from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad would also be present, the Pakistani Foreign Office spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal said on Friday.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj confirmed the meeting in a series of tweets:

A retired Indian Navy officer, Jadhav was arrested by Pakistan on charges of espionage and has been in a Pakistani prison since March 2016. Pakistan accused Jadhav of being a spy for India's premier foreign intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and of instigating unrest in the Balochistan region.

In April this year, a Pakistani military court convicted Jadhav on charges of espionage, sentencing him to death.

India protested against the sentencing, denying all the allegations against Jadhav, however, could not able secure counsellor access to Jadhav. India took the matter to the International Court of Justice, which issued a stay order on Jadhav's death sentence, although Pakistan did not accept the ruling.

The ICJ had announced December 13 as the deadline for Pakistan's submissions countering the allegations made by India at the previous hearing.
