Hope Rajinikanth's Colour Isn't Saffron, Says Kamal Haasan At Harvard University On Alliance

Recent months have witnessed the confirmation of political debut of two popular Tamil Nadu actors, superstar Rajinikanth and renowned actor Kamal Haasan. Haasan has been quite open about his aversion to 'saffron', representing the BJP, and while making an address at the famous Harvard University in the US, hinted that an alliance with Rajinikanth would be unlikely if 'his colour' was saffron.

"I hope Rajinikanth's colour is not saffron because if it is, an alliance is unlikely," Haasan said at the Harvard Kennedy School.

"It isn't like choosing the star cast for films," he said.

"My films were different from my peers and I want to be different in politics too," Haasan said.

"My true purpose today is to challenge the status quo and mediocrity that has plagued Tamil Nadu. When average businessmen and politicians set mediocrity as a standard, then rubbish becomes acceptable," he said.

The death of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on December 5, 2016 created a perceived vacuum in the state's politics, with AIADMK splitting into two factions and later combining, while Opposition DMK chief M Karunanidhi suffered from ill-health issues.

On December 31, 2017, Rajinikanth confirmed his entry into politics while Kamal Haasan on January 17, 2018, confirmed that he would be setting up his own political party, the name of which would be announced on February 21.

Regarding a possible alliance with Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth has maintained that "only time will tell".
