The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday confirmed that there would be a formal meeting between the Foreign Minister of Pakistan Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Raveesh Kumar said, “I can confirm that on the request of the Pakistani side, a meeting between EAM & Pakistani Foreign Minister will take place on the sidelines of #UNGA at a mutually convenient date and time.”

He further added, “This is just a meeting, not talks or resumption of dialogue. Let's distinguish between meeting and dialogue. This doesn't change our stand on terrorism.”

Speaking on the question of Kartarpur corridor Kumar said there is no official communication from the Pakistani government. He said, “External Affairs Minister will, therefore, erase this issue in her meeting with the Pakistani Foreign Minister on sidelines of UNGA,”

He also said, “On SAARC our position is clear, the atmosphere in the region is conducive and this is not only India who has felt this as under the shadow of terrorism such summit can’t be held.”

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting to re-initiate the bilateral talks that were halted in the year 2015.
