The treatment of the wife and mother of Kulbhushan Jadhav when they visited him in Pakistan faced backlash in India, especially after the Pakistani authorities refused to return the shoes of Jadhav's wife.

While the matter may be cooling down in India, a group of Indian-Americans and Balochistan activists in Washington DC protested outside the Pakistan embassy over the treatment of Jadhav's family. The activists slammed Pakistan with the protest named "Chappal Chor Pakistan" (shoe thief Pakistan).

An activist at the #ChappalChorPakistan protest in Washington DC said, ""When they stole the chappal of a woman (KulbhushanJadhav's wife) who was in distress, I hope they use these also. I want to say one thing- Pakistan ka matlab kya? Amreeka (America) se dollar la, Hindustan ke joote kha!"

The protestors cited the treatment of Kulbhushan Jadhav's family as an example of Pakistan's narrow-mindedness.

"Pakistan's narrow-mindedness was exposed with how they treated #KulbhushanJadhav's mother & wife, what policy makers & people here need to understand is that Pak as a whole is also being run w/same narrow-minded mentality," a protestor said.

Pakistan, in a "humanitarian gesture" allowed the wife and mother of accused Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav to meet him in Pakistan on December 25. However, Jadhav's family were forced to change their clothes, remove bangles, bindis, and even mangalsutras before they were allowed to meet him. The shoes of his wife were taken away and not returned. As his family was returning to the airport, they were heckled by the Pakistani media.
