2 Jet Airways Pilots Suspended After Overshooting Taxiway In Riyadh, Endangering 141 Passengers

In a bizarre incident, a Jet Airways flight from Riyadh to Mumbai had aborted its take off at the last moment as the pilots attempted to take off from the taxiway instead of the runway endangering the lives of 141 passengers and 7 crew members aboard the aircraft.

A statement from Jet Airways said, “Jet Airways is in contact with the DGCA and has extended all co-operation with regard to the said incident. The airline will continue to adhere to all requirements as laid down by the regulator. The matter is currently under investigation and we cannot comment on this issue.”

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has suspended the license of both the pilots pending enquiry, reported news agency ANI.

A press release issued by Saudi Arabia’s Aviation Investigation bureau reads, “Initial factual information confirmed that the aircraft attempted to take off from taxiway (K) parallel to take off designated runway (R33) while the visibility was high and there was no obstacle of FOD (foreign object) on the taxiway, the aircraft accelerated with full take off power and exceeded the taxiway onto unpaved area ending up close to the exit of taxiway (G4) north of taxiway (K).”
