The human stomach is home to strong acid that breaks down the food we consume, but there are some things that even our stomach acids cannot break down, for example, metal nails.

Doctors from the state-run Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on Monday successfully removed an astounding 639 metal nails, weighing a total of more than 1 kg, from the stomach of a 48-year-old man reportedly suffering from schizophrenia.

“The patient is from North 24 Parganas district’s Gobardanga. He was suffering from schizophrenia and had swallowed nails and soil regularly over a period of time,” said Dr Siddhartha Biswas who had conducted the operation.

The surgery was completed in around an hour and 45 minutes and was carried out by making a 10cm incision in the abdomen of the patient and then removing the metal nails by using a magnet. Apart from the nails, soil was also recovered from the stomach of the patient, revealed Dr Biswas.

The patient had been complaining of pain in his stomach since the last week of September and was taken to a private nursing home where X-Rays displayed the presence of nails in his abdomen. He was taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for further tests which confirmed the presence of nails and identified that they were around 2 to 2.5 inches long.

Dr Biswas stated that the patient is currently stable, adding, “We are keeping him under observation before he is given a fitness certificate.”

While ingesting of non-edible items is not typically associated with schizophrenia, the condition of wanting to consume such items is classified as Pica.
