World Idli Day 2018: Here Are 5 Different Easy To Prepare Low Calories Idli Recipes

Every day is a festival in some part of the world or someday to celebrate our love for something. And when it comes to Food, our love increases in so many levels that it's often hard to define.

We all love Idlis. This light and nutritious south Indian delicacy is yummy and easy to make. While Idli is already quite healthy and there are few things you can add to your idli batter to make it more delicious and nutritive.

On the occasion of World Idli Day, we present you 5 different recipes to prepare delicious and low calories idlis; 

Stuffed Idli

A healthy udipi breakfast of idli with a stuffing of dal, nuts and vegetables. A light meal to enjoy!

Ingredients Of Stuffed Idli

  • 3 cups rice
  • 1 cup urad wash stuffing
  • 1 tsp pistachios - blanched
  • 1 Tbsp roasted cashew nut
  • 1 Tbsp green and red bell peppers - diced
  • 1 Tbsp pickle masala
  • 1 tsp kasoori methi
  • 1 Tbsp carrot - sliced

How to Make Stuffed Idlis

  1. Soak rice and urad dal and wet grind to make the batter.
  2. Set aside to ferment.
  3. Brush idli tray with oil.
  4. Place ingredients of the stuffing, mixed or separate in the centre of each idli space.
  5. Pour the fermented mixture over the stuffing.
  6. Steam until idlis are cooked.
  7. Serve hot.

Masala Rava Idli

Idlis made with semolina (rava) but with added flavours of peppers, curry leaves and mustard seeds.

Ingredients Of Masala Rava Idli

  • 3 cups semolina
  • 2 Tbsp oil
  • 2 dry red peppers - broken into pieces
  • 6-7 curry leaves
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds - for seasoning
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup sour yoghurt
  • 1 tsp Eno's fruit salt

How to Make Masala Rava Idli

1.Heat the oil and add the peppers, curry leaves, mustard seeds and when they splutter, add the semolina and saute over low heat, till an aroma emanates.

2.Take it off the heat and let it cool.

3.When cool, mix the semolina and yoghurt to a smooth batter add the salt.

4.Keep aside in a warm place for about an hour.

5.Add the Eno's and steam immediately in an idli steamer for 6-9 minutes (cocktail sized) and 15-20 minutes if the bigger size.

6.Serve with hot Sambar. 

Oats Idli Recipe

Low in carbs and healthy idlis made with oats and grated carrots. Ideal for those who are calorie conscious. Oats being rich in minerals, vitamins and proteins give this dish a high nutritive value without compromising on the delicious taste. Easy and quick to make, this low-calorie Oats Idli recipe is ideal for a good breakfast or brunch at home.

Ingredients Of Oats Idli

  • 2 Cups Oats
  • 1/2 Litre Curd (slightly sour)
  • 1 Tbsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 Tbsp Urad Dal
  • 1/2 Tbsp Channa dal
  • 1/2 Tbsp Oil
  • 2 tsp Green chillies, finely chopped
  • 1 Cup Carrots, grated
  • 2 Tbsp Coriander, finely chopped
  • 1/2 Tbsp Turmeric powder
  • 2 Tbsp Salt
  • A pinch of Eno fruit salt

How to Make Oats Idli

1.On a tawa, dry roast the oats until they turn slightly brown and then powder the oats in a mixer.

2.In a pan, add oil, mustard seeds, urad dal, channa dal and allow the mustard to splutter and the dals to turn golden.

3.To this, add the chopped chillies, coriander and grated carrots.

4.Add the turmeric powder and fry for a minute.

5.Add this seasoning to the powdered oats mixture and add the curd to it to make a batter like that of idli batter's consistency.

6.You can add as much curd to the mixture to achieve the consistency, but do not add water to the batter.

7.Grease the idli steamer plates with oil and pour the batter into each area of the steamer.

8.Steam the idlis for 15 minutes.

Note: To know if the idli is cooked, poke an idli with a knife and check if the batter does not stick to the knife.

9.Once done remove the idlis and serve with Onion chutney.

Kanchipuram Idli Recipe

Mildly spiced idlis made with rava, rice and a stuffing of fresh vegetables. Quick, easy and delightful!

Ingredients Of Kanchipuram Idlis

  • 2 cups rice
  • 4 Tbsp sooji or rava
  • 1/2 cup chopped carrots, french beans and mashed green peas and salt to taste.

How to Make Kanchipuram Idli

  1. Grind rice after soaking it in water for 4 hours.
  2. Make this into a thick batter, adding roasted rava to the batter.
  3. Add salt and the finely chopped vegetables.
  4. Put into the idli mould in portions and steam for 10 minutes doing this in batches.
  5. Serve hot, preferably with ghee.

BONUS: Chocolate Idli Recipe

Make your morning breakfast fun by serving these easy and delicious steamed Chocolate Idlis. No butter, No eggs, Just a few simple ingredients!

Ingredients Of Chocolate Idli

  • ½ cup semolina or suji (I used 'fine suji' easily available in Indian stores)
  • ¼ cup yoghurt
  • 10 tsp sugar
  • 4 tsp cocoa powder
  • 4 tbsp chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp oil
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 5 Tbsp water and a few tsp less/more

How to Make Chocolate Idli

  1. For making idlis you will need a steamer and Idli stand. 
  2. Turn on your steamer.
  3. In a bowl, add all the ingredients and mix until evenly mixed. The consistency of the batter should be neither too thick and nor too thin.
  4. Once water is boiling in the steamer, add few drops of oil in all the crevices and pour a tbsp or two of batter.
  5. Once done the filling, place the idli plate inside the steamer and cover tightly. Let it steam for 10-11 minutes at high gas.
  6. Using a toothpick check if the idlis are done.
  7. Enjoy hot with whipped cream and fresh strawberries!
