Producer and director Ashutosh Gowariker is famous for his opulent sets and larger-than-life movies, including Jodhaa Akbar, Mohenjo Daro and Lagaan. For his next film 'Panipat', based on the Third Battle of Panipat that took place on January 14, 1761, Gowariker is recreating the majestic Shaniwar Wada palace in Pune in a full-scale replica he revealed on Thursday.

The original palace of the Peshwa, the Shaniwar Wada was build in 1732 and was the seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire till 1818 when they lost control to the British East India Company. The recreation for the film Panipat will see art director Nitin Desai coming together with Gowariker after their previous recreation of Agra Fort for Jodhaa Akbar.

Gowariker confirmed on Twitter that the construction of the Recreation of the ‘Shaniwar Wada’ to original scale began on Wednesday, on the auspicious occassion of Akshay Tritya, and also shared pictures.

Since the palace of Shaniwar Wada holds great historical importance for the story of Panipat, the palace is being recreated at N D Studios in actual scale and splendour of the original Shaniwar Wada of Pune. The epic Third Battle of Panipat was fought between the Maratha Empire and the invading forces of the King of Afghanistan Ahmad Shah Abdali in 1761 at Panipat.

The film 'Panipat' with the tagline 'The Great Betrayal' stars Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon and is set to release on December 6, 2019.
