The veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah sparked controversy on December 21 when he commented on Bulandshahr violence in an interview with an NGO.

He said that the death of a cow is being given more importance than the killing of a police officer.

Shah became the target of online trolls as well as right-wing groups, with many accusing him of being a traitor.

In the middle of this controversy surrounding Shah Bollywood actresses, Swara Bhaskar and Richa Chadha came out in his support.

Both the actresses tweeted from their respective Twitter account and backed Shah’s comment.

An event at the Literature Festival in Rajasthan's Ajmer where the actor was to deliver a keynote address on Friday got cancelled amid protests by right-wing groups.

A mob descended on the site of the festival and resorted to vandalism to lodge their protest.

Groups including the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha shouted slogans at the LitFest venue against Naseeruddin Shah.

The actor also expressed concern for his children safety and said, "I feel anxious for my children because tomorrow if a mob surrounds them and asks, 'Are you a Hindu or a Muslim?' they will have no answer. It worries me that I don't see the situation improving anytime soon."

The criticism took a near-comical turn when Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena claimed that they had booked a flight ticket for Shah to Pakistan.
