The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has refused to certify a promo without cuts for the film 'Mohalla Assi' that was submitted last week for the film one month ahead of its theatrical release, media reported on Thursday.

Sunny Deol and Sakshi Tanwar-starrer Mohalla Assi has become one of the most controversial films of their career.

The difficulties in the release of the film seem to be unending. The film received a censor certificate in September after a battle that lasted almost two years. Delay of the release began when the application for certification of the film was submitted to the (CBFC) in March 2016.

Co-producer Ashok Ahuja was quoted by the Mumbai Mirror as saying, “A part of our promo had gone viral a few years ago, based on which many PILs were filed against the makers, after which the censor board said that parts of the film were hurting religious sentiments. We approached High Court and got our film cleared with an ‘A’ certificate and instructions to edit out one scene.”

“Promos and trailers have to be cleared by the board before being released in the public domain. While our promo for a ‘U’ certificate has been cleared, the ‘A’ promo, has been denied. We have been told to remove two more scenes (with bad language) from the promo, but they are vital to our promotion,” Ahuja further added.

The film has been lying in cans for years now. The Chandraprakash Dwivedi directorial is based on Kashi Nath Singh's book Kashi Ka Assi that dissects the politically-charged events of 1990 and 1998, including the Ram Janmabhoomi issue and the implementation of the Mandal Commission.

The official release date of the film is November 16, 2018.
