Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor starrer 'horror comedy' Stree was widely appreciated with its offbeat premise and unusual genre and continues to rake in cash at the box office weeks after its release on August 31.

Stree, made at a modest budget of Rs 24 crore, has now become the 9th film of 2018 to earn more than Rs 100 crore at the box office after Padmaavat, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Raid, Baaghi 2, Raazi, Race 3, Sanju, and Gold.

Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh confirmed the earnings of the film in a tweet on Sunday, hailing the film as a 'lottery' for its investors and wrote, "‏And Stree hits a century... Crosses ₹ 100cr mark... [Week 3] Fri 2.14 cr, Sat 3.76 cr. Total: ₹ 101.43 cr. India biz... This one’s a LOTTERY for its investors."

Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree is set against the backdrop of a small town named Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh where men disappear every year during 4 days of festivities and to save themselves, locals write 'O Stree Kal Aana' (oh stree come tomorrow) on the walls. Stree is said to be based on the folk story of a witch who knocks on doors at night that residents must not answer. The film also features Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurrana and Vijay Raaz in pivotal roles.

A sequel has already been planned for Stree which would go on floors by the end of 2019 and star Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, the producer of the film Dinesh Vijan confirmed in an earlier statement.

"The film's last two shots actually set up the sequel. When you watch the movie, you will understand that we intentionally had an open ending. Stree 2 will start off from there and explain those shots. We have written it as a franchise, so there will be a sequel. We are happy that the confidence in the content has paid off," Vijan said.

"Along with Shraddha's backstory, a few other pertinent questions will be answered in the second instalment. The cast will be retained, but there will be new inclusions too. Predominantly, it will still be driven by Raj and Shraddha's characters," he said.

"We hope to go on floors with Stree 2 by the end of 2019. And hopefully, in two years, we will be ready with it," added Vijan.
