Using an unusual combination of comedy, horror and adding a touch of romance, Stree, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao has emerged as a hit at the box office, earning Rs 31.26 crore in its first 3 days.

Dinesh Vijan, who produced the film along with Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru confirmed to media that a sequel has been planned for Stree, and that the film's last two shots were purposefully inserted as an open ending, paving the way for a sequel. He also confirmed that the sequel would predominantly be driven by Rajkummar and Shraddha's characters.

"The film's last two shots actually set up the sequel. When you watch the movie, you will understand that we intentionally had an open ending. Stree 2 will start off from there and explain those shots. We have written it as a franchise, so there will be a sequel. We are happy that the confidence in the content has paid off," Vijan said.

"Along with Shraddha's backstory, a few other pertinent questions will be answered in the second instalment. The cast will be retained, but there will be new inclusions too. Predominantly, it will still be driven by Raj and Shraddha's characters," he said.

"We hope to go on floors with Stree 2 by the end of 2019. And hopefully, in two years, we will be ready with it," added Vijan.

Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree is set against the backdrop of a small town named Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh where men disappear every year during 4 days of festivities and to save themselves, locals write 'O Stree Kal Aana' (oh stree come tomorrow) on the walls. Stree is said to be based on the folk story of a witch who knocks on doors at night that residents must not answer. The film also features Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurrana and Vijay Raaz in pivotal roles.
