Over 9000 Film Prints Missing, Shabana Azmi Urges Smriti Irani To Take Action

The veteran actress, Shabana Azmi who is much recognised for her contribution to parallel cinema has thrown light to an unknown fact. She tweeted to Information and Broadcast Minister, Smriti Irani requesting her attention in the missing film prints matter.

The actress has claimed that over 9200 film prints are missing from National Film Archive of India (NFAI), Pune. Upon further inspection, it was found that indeed many film reels and prints were absent from the archive.

Shabana tweeted, "Smriti Irani, kindly look into reports of 9200 prints missing at National Film Archive, Pune. These are lost treasures and need immediate attention."

A team from Indian Express accessed the data of NFAI records under the Right to Information (RTI) Act and came across the fact that over 51,500 cans of film reels and over 9,200 film prints were physically absent from the archives.

Many culturally and historically relevant films were also found missing. Prints of the legendary filmmaker, Satyajit Ray's films 'Pather Panchali', 'Aparajito' and 'Charulata' were also found missing.

Films like 'Mother India', 'Mera Naam Joker', 'Awaara', 'Bhuvan Shome' and 'Kaagaz ke Phool' were also missing from the record. Any action from I&B Ministry is still awaited.
