Providing Huge Relief To Wink Girl, SC Quashes Criminal Proceedings Against Priya Prakash Varrier

Priya Prakash Varrier, the girl who went viral with a mere wink, can now sigh in relief as her plea to quash the complaints filed against her and the makers of Oru Adaar Love was heard by the Supreme Court on Wednesday and the order came in her favour.

In a welcome decision, the Apex authority has issued a stay on all criminal proceedings against the teenage actress. Some Muslim groups have lodged FIRs against the actress and her film makers alleging them of hurting their hurting religious sentiments.

A bench consisting Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud agreed to an urgent hearing of a petition by the Malayalam actress seeking the dismissal of FIRs lodged against her and 'Oru Adaar Love' makers.

The 18-year-old B.Com student has requested the top court's assistance from the criminal proceedings initiated by states of Maharashtra and Telangana against her. In her plea, she mentioned the FIR lodged against her on February 14 at Falaknama police station at Hyderabad.

The actress further mentioned about a criminal complaint filed by the Secretary of Raza Academy, Mumbai with the Commissioner of Police demanding appropriate action against the filmmakers along with taking down the video and prevent it from being broadcast.

These complaints have created problems for the film's release. Priya Prakash Varrier became an overnight sensation post her 'wink' song, as popularly titled by the masses went viral and many critics started lodging complaints against the lyrics of the song. The actress has argued that the track is a Mappila song or a traditional Muslim number from the Malabar region of Kerala.
