The Ministry of Human Resources Development denied Jamia Millia Islamia’s request to confer Shah Rukh Khan with an honorary doctorate, citing that it would not be in order as he had already received a similar degree from the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU).

Though the HRD Ministry said that there is no such practice where one can’t be given multiple honours but it is usually discouraged.

The university wrote to Khan on January 30, 2018, to inform him that it wanted to give him the degree as he was its “most prestigious alumnus”. The university told him it was waiting for the ministry’s approval.

On his behalf, one of his assistants had given his consent to the proposal of an honorary degree from the varsity. After his consent, a request for the same was sent to HRD Ministry last year by Jamia for approval.

There is no official ban on the practice of people receiving multiple honorary degrees. Bharat Ratna awardee CNR Rao, MS Swaminathan are among the ones to have received honorary degrees on multiple occasions.

While Rao was awarded honorary degrees from the University of Kashmir and IIT Kanpur, Swaminathan was awarded from Punjab Univeristy and IIT Kanpur, revealed The Indian Express.

Khan was a post-graduate student at Jamia’s AJK Mass Communication Research Centre from 1988-90. He was however barred from taking his final year exams due to poor attendance.
