A Mumbai Court charged Bollywood actor Suraj Pancholi with abetment in the suicide case of his ex-girlfriend Jiah Khan on Tuesday. The charges under the Section 306 of Indian Penal Code were made against the actor, but he pleaded not guilty. The trial is to begin from February 17.

Actress Jiah Khan committed suicide in 2013 in her flat in Juhu, Mumbai by hanging herself. She left a suicide note as well in which she blamed Sooraj Pancholi for ruining her life and mental harassment. When she committed suicide, she was pregnant.

Aditya Pancholi, the father of Sooraj said "We are very happy [that the trial is beginning]. We have been waiting for this day for the past four-and-a-half years. Now the real trial begins, now we will fight the actual fight. If we are guilty, Sooraj will be punished; and if we are not, then Sooraj will be set free."

As per the law, a trial cannot begin unless charges are framed against the accused. Aditya says that Jiah’s mother, Rabia, was not letting the case move forward. “What was happening was that every time the trial was to go to the court, the complainant (Rabia Khan) would go and get a stay on the trial,” he said.

Aditya also said that they are the ones who wanted to start this trial but the other party was delaying it.

It has been reported that Rabia the mother of the actress Jiah Khan wanted a charge of murder against Sooraj.

Aditya Pancholi added, "We have gone through a lot of stress, but we stood by each other, and friends from the industry like Salman (Khan) were also there for us. The trial cannot go on forever. Sooraj is a young man and he has his life ahead of him."

Earlier the high court had transferred the case to the CBI after Jiah Khan’s mother Rabia Khan approached the court and claimed that her daughter was murdered. In December 2015, the CBI filed a charge-sheet against Pancholi for abetting suicide. Rabia Khan then again moved the high court alleging the CBI had ignored crucial evidence.

The suicide note written by Jiah Khan alleged "intimate relationship, physical abuse and mental and physical torture" at the hands of Sooraj Pancholi which led her to commit suicide.
