Belgian Reporter Tintin Turns 90, Will Be Out On A New Adventure

Fans of the famous comic book hero Tintin are reminiscing their good old memories and best moments from the book as the hero turned 90 on Friday.

From his earliest adventures in January 1929, as he journeyed into the Soviet Union to report on the excesses of Stalinism.

Casterman, which published his comic book adventures, said a new film featuring the cub reporter by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is in the pipeline, with Steven Spielberg, who made Tintin’s first Hollywood outing in 2011, producing this time.

It was on Jan. 10, 1929 when the first of the adventures of the intrepid international reporter was published in “Le Petit Vingtieme’’ newspaper supplement in Brussels.

Created by Belgian artist Herge, the adventures of the fictional character with his customary blue sweater, rolled pants and flipped copper hair took him and his faithful dog Snowy across the world, building an image of journalists as well-meaning reformers.

From taking on thugs to making right the world’s wrongs, the Belgian icon and fearless journalist has always been a favourite among comic book lovers across all ages.

The young journalist’s exploits with his friend Captain Haddock have been translated into more than 70 languages and, at last count sold more than 230 million copies around the world.

There has also been a cartoon series and several movies – the most recent of which, The Secret of the Unicorn (2011), was directed by Steven Spielberg.

Moulinsart, the exclusive manager of Herge’s estate, announced on Thursday that a digital edition of “Tintin in the Congo” re-mastered in color will be released via the application “Les Aventures de Tintin.’’
