Following in the trend of making movies based on social issues, the makers of Toilet Ek Prem Katha are targeting the issue of power theft and power cuts in their new film Batti Gul Meter Chalu, starring Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Yami Gautam.

The trailer of Batti Gul Meter Chalu was released on Friday, giving a deeper insight to the issues tackled in the film, set in the background of a small town in Uttarakhand. Although the first half of the trailer is a bit fragmented, as it shows the difficulties due to power cuts and high electricity bills, the second half of the trailer comes together as it shows how Shahid's friend, played by Divyenndu Sharma commits suicide due to high electricity bills.

From being an easy-going lawyer Shahid goes on a mission to make the electricity companies pay for the death of his friend, and faces Yami Gautam as opposition in the courtroom. Shraddha appears as a friend of Shahid, who reinforces his conviction in fighting against the power companies.

Batti Gul Meter Chalu director Shree Narayan Singh described the film as being close to his heart and said, "Batti Gul Meter Chalu is a subject close to my heart. I know the problems the interiors of the country face thanks to the fluctuations of electricity. Sidharth and Garima, who wrote Toilet Ek Prem Katha, have written this also. Bhushanji has been a huge support. Shahid, Shraddha and the entire cast has been completely involved right from the beginning. We have given it our best. The trailer is out today. I am excited and nervous.”
