Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn in his filmy career has experimented with a variety of different roles, including unconventional and darker roles. Ajay is said to have expressed interest in playing the role of dacoit-turned-parliamentarian Phoolan Devi's assassin Sher Singh Rana on the big screen in a biopic on the life of the assassin, media reported on Friday.

Sher Singh Rana was convicted for the murder of Phoolan Devi in 2001 and escaped from Tihar Jail in 2004, attempting to reach the tomb of Prithviraj Chouhan in Afghanistan but was arrested in Kolkata in 2006. A successful and controversial movie has already been made on the life of Phoolan Devi up to the time of her surrender in 1983.

According to sources quoted by Mid-Day, it was the 'interesting' life of Rana that caught the attention of Ajay.

"What caught Ajay's attention is the interesting life of Rana, who escaped from Tihar jail in 2004, and claimed to have gone to Afghanistan to bring back the remains of the 12th century Indian ruler, Prithviraj Chauhan, before he was caught in Kolkata in 2006," sources told mid-day.

Rana also wrote a book on his experiences, titled 'Jail Diary: Tihar Se Kabul-Kandahar Tak' which would provide details into his life story.

Sources say that details of the project are yet to be finalised but that Ajay Devgn is likely to start preparing for the project by next year.

Currently, Ajay Devgn is working on another biopic, titled 'Taanaji: The Unsung Warrior' based on the life of Tanaji Malusare, one of the closest friends and aides of the legendary Maratha General Shivaji.
