The National Award winning Bollywood director Omung Kumar of sports drama biopic Mary Kom starring Priyanka Chopra will once again be helming a sports drama, media reported on Friday. He is again moving to the northeast for his next film based on rugby. Reportedly, he has been writing for the last 2 years for this movie.

The movie is titled as Yubi Lakpi, and it is a traditional football game played in Manipur, India.

“I’ve been writing this film for the past two years. It’s on rugby, a game that has its origin in Manipur where it was played with a coconut for centuries. We will start the film in Manipur and after the interval move to London. We will also be shooting in Mauritius,” Kumar said to Mumbai Mirror.

Producer of the film Sandeep Singh quoted by Mumbai Mirror specified that scenes shot Mauritius would be passed off as Manipur.

“The film will be largely shot in Mauritius and UK with a few portions set in Manipur because shooting in the state is difficult,” said Singh.

Kumar explained that while Mary Kom based on the story of one woman in the boxing ring, this film will focus on a team.

“We have five writers on the project—one is from Manipur, another from Australia, two from Mumbai, and me,” said the filmmaker.

“Rugby is still an alien sport for most Indians. Few know about the rugby competition for the Calcutta Cup that was launched in India but is now played between England and Scotland. The film will touch on this and other incidents that are a part of the sport’s history,” said Kumar.

The director and producer plan to use local talent from Manipur and UK.

Mary Kom was based on a real story of a simple girl from Manipur who harboured the dream of being a successful boxer.
