Filmmaker Karan Johar, who took over the reins of Dharma Productions after the death of his father Yash Johar, is now bringing back a dream project conceptualised by the father-son duo 15 years ago, an epic drama titled 'Kalank'.

Karan Johar announced the project on Wednesday along with the film's impressive star cast, which includes the Saajan couple Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt apart from Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha. Abhishek Varman of 2 States fame will be directing Kalank which goes on floors by the end of this month and will be released on April 19, 2019.

The announcement of Kalank was made by Karan Johar in a tweet, "Proud & excited to announce our EPIC DRAMA #KALANK Releasing April 19th, 2019, Directed by Abhishek Varman, Starring @MadhuriDixit @sonakshisinha @aliaa08 @Varun_dvn #AdityaRoyKapur & @duttsanjay!”

The film is an epic drama set in the 1940s and will mark the collaboration of 3 of the biggest production houses of Bollywood, including Dharma Productions, Fox Star Studios and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment.

Karan Johar was quoted by the Indian Express as saying, “Kalank has been an emotional journey for me. It is a gem of an idea that I had nearly 15 years ago and a film that was in a pre-production stage helmed by my father. I am now proud to pass it onto the extremely capable and visionary hands of director Abhishek Varman. Kalank has a beautifully structured story by Shibani Bathija and an exceptionally fluid narrative and screenplay by Abhishek.”

Meanwhile, the shooting of Karan Johar production 'Dhadak', a remake of 2016 superhit Marathi language film Sairat launching Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles came to an end on Tuesday.
