In a major step to revitalise the education system of Uttar Pradesh madrasas, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has cleared a proposal to include National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks in the syllabus of madrasas in the state.

According to reports, textbooks for the subjects of Mathematics, Science, and English will likely be added to the madrasas syllabus, without making any changes to the existing religious curriculum.

In a tweet, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma said that after receiving clearance from the state government, the UP Board of Madarsa Education has begun preparations to include the prescribed NCERT text in their curriculum.

Currently, there are more than 19,000 recognised and 560 government-aided madrasas in UP.

“We are in the process of standardising and integrating the syllabus, especially for subjects like science, mathematics, and English. We plan to introduce NCERT books,” registrar of UP Madrasa Shiksha Parishad, Rahul Gupta said to media.

Including NCERT books in the madrasa curriculum is being seen as a way to bring madrasas at par with public and private schools in the state and to provide increased job opportunities for students. In the past, students passing out of madrasas were often forced to become alims or maulvis due to their limited educational backgrounds.

Earlier this year, the UP government had launched an online portal for the UP Madarsa Board where the various madrasas were required to submit details of their establishments in a bid to check 'irregularities'.
