In the wake of Tamil Nadu accounting for the largest number of road accidents in the nation, the state government is planning a unique accident insurance scheme for school children.

The plan of the state government to provide insurance cover for school children was revealed by the minister for school education K A Sengottaiyan on Saturday.

"The insurance for students is being planned for the first time in the country and discussions are on with chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. An announcement will be made soon," he said to media.

Although Sengottaiyan did not confirm whether the scheme would extend to only government school students or if it would cover students of all institutions including private and aided ones, the nearly 1.4 crore government school students in the state would stand to benefit from the scheme.

Parents, especially from low-income backgrounds or those less educated often fear the hardships in sending their children to school and outweigh the fears in comparison to the benefits of education. An accident insurance scheme would reassure the parents that in the worst case scenario of a road accident, at least their children would receive free care.

According to data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Tamil Nadu ranks highest in the number of accidents taking place near educational institutions. In 2016, a total of 5,010 accidents took place near educational institutions such as schools and colleges, killing 1,207 and injuring 3,803.
