The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Monday declared the results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2018 which was conducted on May 6 for admission to undergraduate medical and dental courses across India.

According to CBSE data, more than 13.36 lakh students registered for the NEET 2018, an increase from the 11.5 lakh students who had registered in 2017. The exam was attempted by a total of 5,80,648 male candidates and 7,46,076 female candidates across 136 cities in 2,255 exam centres.

More than 7 lakh students have qualified, including 6.3 lakh from general category, however, the total number of seats in MBBS and BDS institutes in India is presently only 60,000.

Earlier on Monday, the Supreme Court had refused to stay the declaration of the NEET 2018 results which had been sought by petitioners claiming that there was a vast difference between the question papers in English and Tamil of the same exam.

The NEET was first introduced in May 2013 but was scrapped the very next year in 2014, with states conducting their separate Common Entrance Test (CET) for admissions to medical and dental courses in their respective states. The Supreme Court in 2016 reinforced the compulsion of the NEET exam making it the single window entrance exam for admission to medical and dental institutes across India.
