The start of Sri Lanka innings was a strong one as Kusal Mendis led the lineup and scored a 38 balls fifty. After leaking a lot of runs in the first ten overs, and Left-arm pacer Unadkat was taken to the cleaners as he gave away 15 runs in the first over. The Indian bowlers did well to submerge the Sri Lankan charge and reduce them to a modest total of 152. Spinners Washington Sundar (2/21) and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/34) scalped three wickets.

Even though India was chasing a modest score, they had a jittering start and lost both their openers, captain Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, cheaply. However, India rode on unbeaten knocks from Manish Pandey (42) and Dinesh Karthik (39) to overwhelm Sri Lanka's total with nine balls to spare, with southpaw Suresh Raina chipping in with a useful 27 runs of his own.

By virtue of this win, India managed to avenge their five-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in the tournament opener.
