Kings XI Punjab’s dream of entering the playoffs was ruined on Sunday as they were beaten by Chennai Super Kings who outplayed them, winning the game by five wickets.

Ravichandran Ashwin led team needed to win the game by at least 54 runs in order to qualify for the playoff but they failed to even register a victory. Their defeat came as a blessing for Rajasthan Royals who became the fourth team to enter the playoffs with 14 points. Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Night Riders have already entered the playoffs.

Batting first, Kings XI Punjab were all out for just 153 runs thanks to some quality bowling from CSK bowlers. Lungi Ngidi took four wickets and yielded just ten runs in his 4 overs. Shardul Thakur and Dwayne Bravo took two wickets each. Chahar and Jadeja got one wicket each.

Coming to bat CSK too saw some hiccups but 154 was an easy target to chase. Suresh Raina remained not out for 61 runs while Deepak Chahar contributed 39 runs. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored the winning run in his signature style as he knocked the ball for a six.

Kings XI Skipper Ravichandran Ashwin and Ankit Rajpoot took two wickets each while Mohit Sharma got one wicket.

After the match Ashwin tweeted, “We had our moments in the first half of the tournament and not upto it in the business end, lots of learnings and positives from this campaign, looking forward to better things in the future and thanks to all those who supported us this year.”
